Aprilia SR50 Rider Sings Our Praises and We're Excited!

Earlier this spring a good customer of ours gave me a call about a possible good deal he found on acquiring an 09 Aprilia SR50 Scooter with the Piaggio engine and wanted to know if it was a quality scooter and if we could work on it. Immediately my response was an emphatic yes, get it! Aprilia SR50’s are Italian quality and highly tunable. So he went ahead and purchased it. Keep in mind his main bike is a CBR 1000. As soon as he had possession of the scooter he came by DMW for a once over and shortly after he calls again wanting more speed.  The SR50 is by far one of the fastest 50cc scooters I’ve ever seen. I test road it and was able to hit 45mph just on our street, but it wasn’t enough for him.

We suggested a Leo Vince Exhaust. The LV exhaust comes with roller weights, and clutch spring. He performed the installation himself and was able to get better performance; an increased of top end speed to 52mph! That was still not enough for him so he asked, “What is the next stage”? Stage II was to tune the transmission with a Malossi Variator, Clutch Springs, and Torque Spring, then test it on our Dynojet SD12. With these upgrades we were able to increase power transfer to the wheels and achieved a top speed of 56mph. He was happy, but it still wasn’t enough.

A few weeks later he calls cause his starter gear failed and while in the shop he asks the question again. “What is the next stage? Can I do 60mph?” I believe we can, Stage III would consist of quite a few parts (Malossi Racing Cylinder, and Head, Air Intake, Reeds, ECU remapping, DR. Pulley Racing Clutch, Final Drive Gears, etc etc…) and extensive Dynojet SD12 tuning. He agreed and by the end of the process we were able to gain a whopping 1.58HP and .85 ft/lbs of torque from our Stage I results. Yielding a top speed on the Dynojet SD12of 72mph! Mission accomplished!!

Reservation Deposit:
A $25 deposit per rented bike is all that’s needed to hold reservations. The balance of the rental charge may be paid on your rental day. We require 48-hour notice for cancellations to return deposits, less a $10 processing charge. We work in good faith with clients to reschedule reservations on the chance of inclement weather on your reservation day.

Customer Praises DMW for a GY6-50cc Build and Dynojet Tune!

Recently a customer came to us with issues he was having with his almost new Peace Sport 50cc scooter. He had bought 2 of them and one was performing normally, the second scooter was very sluggish.  He had gone to several places and could not find someone that would work on it until he was given our information by our good friends at Cycle Gear, so he contacted us. After a thorough inspection we found the clutch was over heating, and melted the grease onto the bell and contaminated the shoes, and also engine compression was a little on the low side for a new engine. After much conversation and figuring out his needs we made recommendations on what parts would be needed to tune and satisfy his power needs. We went with a full set up of hi performance parts that would all work together smoothly. In first order we chose Dr. Pulley for the clutch and variator they are very high quality hi performance products and can be tuned very precisely. That fixed the slipping clutch problem which you can see the results on our dyno chart torque reading at the bottom of the page.  We also wanted more power so we addressed the engine.


Upon inspection of the cylinder head we found the exhaust valve looked over heated. I've seen this damage before as a byproduct of using fuel with ethanol. Since it was easier to drop the engine to perform the work we chose to install a new 52mm big bore kit and a hi flowing head, along with a hi performance carburetor, intake and exhaust. This allowed us to be able to tune the scooter on our Dynojet SD12 without any restrictions.

When it was all said and done we had doubled the horsepower and increased the grip of the clutch all across the power range sending more power to the wheels! His top speed went from 43mph to 54mph!

I was thoroughly impressed with the performance of we were able to achieve with these combinations.  Our customer was most grateful! Here is what he had to say:

Another Satisfied Customer

Last week, a good customer (like all of you!) came by after breaking the bracket system on his new custom exhaust. We decided to go ahead and make our own stainless steel brackets and clamps to hold down the exhaust and also to tune up his transmission to see if he could get a little bit more acceleration. We did a base run on our Dynojet and it netted almost 6hp to the wheels and about 4.25 ft-lbs of torque. We found that the best bang for his buck would be to upgrade the variator and weights so we installed the Dr. Pulley brand variator and weights. We went through quite a few different grams until we came up with the best balance, netting  6.75hp peak and about 4.8 ft-lbs of torque! The best part is that we didn't lose any top end whatsoever. These are awesome numbers just on tuning a variator and weights. Now for a test ride: I immediately noticed a difference in acceleration when taking off the line and the mid-range just kept pulling!  It has made the scooter even more fun to ride. OK, time to let the customer have some fun. We called him on July 3rd to let him know it was ready and he was knocking at our shop door within 30 minutes. Fast forward two days later (July 5th) and we received this message from him: 

Customer: "The scooter is running great! I've put over 200 miles on it since Tuesday. I definitely notice a better kick off the line. It throws my head back a little now! And it seems to tackle hills a lot better. The throttle feels smoother at my hand."
